  • Steam's library of games is growing quicker every year

Just let this sink in for a moment.

Steam Spy creator Sergey Galyonkin shared an intriguing graph on Twitter today that suggests more games were released on Steam in 2016 than any other year in the history of the platform.

Take the time to truly consider the fact that 38% of ALL Steam games were released in 2016.

If those numbers are on point, that means roughly 80 percent of all the games on Steam came out in the past 3 years - and the trend shows no signs of stopping. ~26 percent were released past year, and ~16 percent were released on Steam in 2014.

This shocking pie graph comes to us thanks to a tweet from Steam Spy, a tool that uses Steam's web API to derive statistics about its catalogue of games.

The data supports the notion that the processes of developing and releasing games have become both easier and more popular over the past several years. Galyonkin also noted that he left out games that are listed with no ownership data, although that figure only amounts to 100 or so titles.

The likely culprit for that explosion in new releases is Steam Early Access, which Valve launched in March 2013 following the mid-2012 debut of Steam Greenlight.

The increased accessibility to high-quality, free game development engines would be another reason for this increase in releases.

Good gravy. And 2016 isn't even over yet.
