Shanghai Rolex Masters 2016 Final: Murray vs. Bautista Agut Score, Reaction

17 October, 2016, 05:21 | Author: Lula Armstrong

ANDY MURRAY has won the Shanghai Masters for a third time after completing a ideal tournament in which he never dropped a set with victory over Roberto Bautista Agut.

Murray also cuts the gap on Djokovic, who was shocked by Spain's Bautista in the semis, to 915 points as he zeroes in on the Serb's top ranking.

Andy Murray blasted his way into the Shanghai Masters final on Saturday but holder Novak Djokovic angrily smashed his racquet and ripped his shirt as he crashed out to Roberto Bautista.

"My goal wasn't to finish number one at the end of this year but in the early parts of next year there is an opportunity - 900 points doesn't seem like loads", he told Sky Sports.

The world number one has been nosediving since he won his first French Open title in June, losing early at Wimbledon and the Olympics and complaining he had lost motivation.

With his 41st ATP title and sixth this year, Murray joins Stefan Edberg in joint 15th place on the list of Open-era title winners. I played a really solid tie-break and second set I started taking a bit more risk and playing the points better.

However, the Scot displayed impressive form to break the world No 32 twice to rattle off four successive games to lead 4-2.

Victory was nigh when Murray went two breaks up in the second set, and he served it out after 103 minutes to set up an attempt at a third Shanghai title in Sunday's final.

World number two Murray took control of proceedings in the second set as an aggressive Bautista Agut, who hit 25 unforced errors during the match, failed to maintain his intensity.

Murray's class shone through in the breaker though, as the British No 1 took it by seven points to one.

"I just don't understand, you know, the decisions that he has made", Djokovic grumbled to media.

"I've been moving forward a lot better, I've been finishing a few more points up at the net, changing the direction of the ball a little better and moving in behind those shots", he said. I didn't play through February this year because of the baby coming.

"That's assuming Novak doesn't win any matches but he will because he's the best in the world".

He was pushed hard, however, that game going to deuce before Murray earned a set point only to double fault.

Although Murray is confident of becoming the world's best player, he is realistic in his chances of achieving that feat this year.
