Ryan plugs GOP campaign agenda, but no mention of Trump

  • Campaign 2016 Trump

"While Paul Ryan and Scott Walker won't be sharing the stage with Donald Trump on Monday, their silence and continued support for his presidential campaign is proof that they share his unsafe views", said Wisconsin Democratic Party spokesman Phil Shulman before Johnson also announced he wasn't going to be there.

Donald Trump speaks at a meeting of the Iowa Republican Party in Des Moines on May 16, 2015.

Ryan said earlier this week that he would not campaign for Trump or defend him, following the controversy set-off by the nominee's sexually aggressive comments about women and nearly daily reports this week about women coming forward to claim the businessman had inappropriately touched them.

Other House conservatives warn privately that they could blame Ryan if Trump loses by only a slight margin, something that could complicate his prospects for getting re-elected as speaker next year.

That means he can't afford to let the trickle of Republican lawmakers suggesting retaliation against him for dropping Trump grow much larger. Trump has angrily denounced the stories, the media and Republicans who have declined to support him.

It turns out the same password controlled his Twitter account, and within in minutes he was hacked, tweeting his "support" for Trump.

Speaking to a crowd of about 100 students from the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Republican student organization, Ryan focused on House Republicans' legislative priorities and only alluded a few times to the presidential election.

Mr. Ryan may have gambled away his excellent chance to become a president by not standing against Mr. Trump at the right time.

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., who also supported Ryan then, hinted in an interview with The Associated Press that he might not favor keeping Ryan in the House's top job. Asked if it will exacerbate fissures between the party and its base, he said, "I don't have any doubt". They are tougher against Donald Trump than these weaklings ever have been against Obama, and if they're offended by Trump's words, why haven't any of them spoken out about Bill and Hillary's actions towards women? "However, if he can't prevent himself from panicking and helping the enemy in a situation like this, well, then we'll find out", Rohrabacher said Monday.

No matter how well a district has been gerrymandered, candidates still have to get the party faithful to come out and vote.

Ryan had said Monday he would not defend or campaign with Trump. Hillary Clinton even admitted as much earlier this year, when she said at a campaign event, "I get accused of being kind of moderate and center".

House Republicans meet after the November elections to select their nominee for speaker.

Gov. Scott Walker will not be joining presidential nominee Donald Trump at two campaign stops in Wisconsin next week. David Wasserman lays out a multitude of reasons why this is, but the numbers speak for themselves: There are only 37 competitive House races, and six of those are seats already held by Democrats.

It has long appeared likely that the GOP will retain its House majority, but that now seems less sure as Trump's campaign faces major struggles. "At some point, you have to look in the mirror and recognize that you can not possibly justify support for Trump to your children - especially your daughters", said David Humphreys, a Missouri seven-figure GOP donor.
