Xi too is scheduled to have a number of one-to-one meetings including with US President Barack Obama.

Obama spoke Saturday after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the Chinese coastal city of Hangzhou.

Obama and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping handed ratification documents to United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon, who said he was now optimistic the agreement will be in force by the end of this year. Yet thornier issues like.

Ahead of the G20 summit, leaders of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) will meet to finalise their strategy for highlighting issues exercising emerging economies.

China announced on Saturday that it has ratified the emissions-cutting agreement reached last year in Paris, giving a big boost to efforts to bring the accord into effect by the end of this year. Unlikely partners on addressing global warming, the US and China have sought to use their collaboration to ramp up pressure on other countries to take concrete action as well. The climate agreement has been the chief accomplishment of their relationship. In the U.S., Senate ratification is not required because the agreement is not considered a formal treaty.

The G20 countries account for 85 percent of the world economy and 75 percent of world trade, and accommodate two-thirds of the world's population.

Whatever the summit's outcome, China is sparing no effort to ensure it goes off smoothly, relying on its experience hosting major worldwide gatherings such as the 2008 Summer Olympics and last year's Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

"There's going to be a very sharp message on the concerns about maritime security [in the South China Sea] about cybersecurity, about trade and investment challenges in the relationship which are heating up as well", says Michael Goodman, senior adviser for Asian economics at CSIS and a former director for worldwide economics on the National Security Council.

"Where there's a will and there's a vision, and where countries like China and the United States are prepared to show leadership and to lead by example, it is possible for us to create a world that is more secure, more prosperous, and more free than the one that was left for us", Obama added. "When we bind ourselves to a bunch of worldwide norms and rules, it's not because we have to, it's because we recognize that over the long term, building a strong global order is in our interests".

China views the South China Sea as an integral part of its national territory.

Others say they expect the tougher side of the president's China policy to take the spotlight when Obama meets with President Xi.

"The world's two largest economies and two largest emitters, our entrance into this agreement continues the momentum in Paris and to give the rest of the world confidence, either developed or developing countries", Obama said. And, he said, there's little concrete that the leaders can do to counteract a rising tide of anti-free-trade and anti-globalization sentiment in developed economies, primarily the USA and Europe. China vowed that its emissions, which are still growing, will top out by 2030. The U.S. has pledged to cut its emissions by at least 26 percent over the next 15 years, compared to 2005 levels.

Erdogan arrived in the coastal city of Hangzhou on Saturday for the 2016 G20 summit, set to be held Sunday through Monday.
